What We Do

Sri Lanka is still in the disaster recovery phase.

The December 2004 Asian Tsunami was the fifth worst natural disaster in recorded history. Over 100,000 homes were destroyed, approx. 35,000 Sri Lankans were killed and 500,000 Sri Lankans were displaced. The first step to recovery is having a home and reuniting with family. Thousands of families are still torn apart, and without adequate, safe, and clean housing thus impeding their ability to get on with their lives and education.

The mission of Sri Lanka Care is to rebuild, restore, and revitalize communities devastated by the Tsunami, by enabling families and communities to recover their sense of safety, and re-establish their livelihoods.

Sri Lanka Care provides a complete community development solution: a permanent home, to replace tents and temporary housing structures provided during the initial stages of the relief effort; tools and equipment for local businesses to sustain income levels; and restoration of critical community resources, such as schools, medical facilities, and orphanages. Sri Lanka Care works directly with families in need and local contractors to ensure that high quality homes are constructed efficiently, on time and on budget. Tsunami aid has largely been given to men; we have responded to this by ensuring that women in need are the beneficiaries of homes and trade tools as well.

While Sri Lanka Care (SLC) was created in response to the December 2004 Asian Tsunami, the organization is committed over the long term to poverty reduction. SLC seeks not only to assist families in disaster recovery, but to enable them to attain higher standards of living than experienced prior to the Tsunami.
