| Background |
- Vajira Sri is currently Sri Lanka’s largest and most populated orphanage, home to over 400 children ranging from infancy to 18 years. Founded in 1983, just outside Colombo, by the Venerable Dr. Hunupolagama Vajira Sri Nayaka Thero.
- Vajira Sri is a registered Sri Lankan charity approved as a non-governmental charity organization in 1989, and classifies itself as a non-political, non-sectarian, and non-governmental private organization that caters to the needs of children from all faiths.
- After the December 26th Tsunami the orphanage was compelled to stretch present resources and accommodate an additional 81 children. Despite the ongoing rebuilding and rehabilitation efforts our expectation is that more orphans will be sent to Vajira Sri.
- Since the orphanage is not just a residential institution but also functions as a school the general costs are higher than a comparative orphanage that relies on government schools to oversee their children’s education. The type of education that is provided is both traditional, as well as vocational.
- Since 1983 a total of 1,800 children have been cared for, nurtured, and educated by the dedicated professionals at Vajira Sri.
